Walks From Riverside
There
are lots of walks and cycle rides that you can do from Riverside
- without taking your car. These range from a gentle stroll
to an all -day classic high level fell walk. As this is the
Lake District, please ensure that you have the proper clothing,
footwear and equipment needed to meet the changing weather
conditions - please feel free to ask for advice.
The following is a small selection of walks that can be done
from Riverside. Please ask for details and maps.
Waterhead
A pleasant stroll of about a mile that takes you to Waterhead,
past the Roman fort Galava. Waterhead is where you can catch
the Lake Windermere steamers and boats to Bowness and Lakeside.
Stockghyll Force
Is only half a mile from the centre of Ambleside and is fairly
typical of the waterfalls in the Lake District. This is a
very scenic walk that can be extended to around 2 miles to
take in the small hamlet of Seathwaite.
Grasmere
One of the best walks in the Lake District for the least effort!
This walk is around four miles (two and a half hours) and
takes in Rydal Cave and Loughrigg Terrace, with stunning views
across Lake Grasmere to the Fairfield Horseshoe. You can either
get the bus back or return via the "Coffin Route"
Jenkyn's Crag
It is around one mile from the centre of Ambleside to Jenkyn's
Crag and gives great views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding
fells. It can be combined with other walks to Brockhole Visitor
Centre, where the return can be made by motor launch to Waterhead.
Loughrigg Fell
A good beginner's to intermediate fell walk of around 6 miles
and 1100 ft. It provides superb views of the Langdales, Grasmere,
Rydal Water and the Fairfield Horseshoe. It has a relatively
flat summit and lots of little paths, with ever-changing views.
Wansfell Pike
Wansfell gives wonderful views of Ambleside, the whole of
Lake Windermere and its surrounding fells. It is around 5-6
miles and takes in around 1800 ft of ascent. The walk is a
little steep in placesand the actual summit of Wansfell is
just short of 1600 ft.
Red Screes
There are a variety of ways of tackling Red Screes, but from
Ambleside, the walk is around 7 miles and 2300 ft of ascent,
lasting about 5 hours. The actual height of the fell is just
under 2500 ft and provides wonderful views of Ambleside and
Lake Windermere.
Fairfield Horseshoe
This is a classic Lakeland high- level fell walk and takes
in around 8 separate summits. It is covers 11 miles (6-7hours),
with a highpoint of nearly 2900 ft. The total height of ascent
is around 3200ft, with spectacular views of most of the high
fells in the National Park - Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and many
more.
