Ambleside
The
origin of Ambleside was founded during the Roman occupation
of Britain and was under Roman jurisdiction until the early
part of the 4th Century AD. In the 9th
century it was then occupied by the Vikings from whence it
was given its name. It continued to prosper throughout the
centuries and by Victorian times, the interest generated by
the poets – Wordsworth etc – and the natural beauty of the
scenery began to bring an increasing number of visitors to
the area.
Today, Ambleside is one of the most popular, friendly and
busy towns in the Lake District and has still managed to retain
its charm and in addition is pretty central to all of the
attractions in the Lake District. Ambleside is an all the
year around holiday location and has a tremendous variety
of shops, restaurants, cafes and attractions such as the Ambleside
Museum. It also a landing point (at Waterhead) for the Lake
Windemere cruises and boating hire. Check out what Ambleside
